New Year’s resolution are common and the number one resolution is to exercise more. This is backed up by a 2025 survey done by YouGov and tracks with my 20 years of clinical conversations with patients. It is a fantastic idea. Exercise can help you look better, move better, feel better-overall helps you be
better. A plethora of research agrees with this statement and something we will certainly dive deeper into in future posts. All that said-exercising more is only beneficial is if you stick with it rather than resolving to do it in a burst of late December motivation and then ditching it as the winter moves on.
So if you’re rolling, making progress by hitting the weights or running the trails but are starting to feel your motivation wane, here are two key ideas from James Clear’s bestselling 2018 book, Atomic Habits. This book highlights the power of making new behaviours both attractive and obvious to help shift these new actions into habits that stick.

Attractive- go out, spend some money on yourself and buy new runners, workout gear and a gym bag. Whenever you feel good and immediately rewarded by a behaviour you are more likely to stick with it. Having nice stuff that makes you feel good when you wear or use it, dramatically increases likelihood of this. The money spent is an investment in yourself and you are worth it.
Obvious-keep your new stuff in a place you often pass by in your home. Leave it on shelf that makes it noticeable, don’t tuck it away hidden in a closet. Fill your water bottle up and leave in the fridge so you are reminded whenever you open it. These simple acts serve as a regular reminder to get your exercise in.
These two simple changes have helped many people, including myself, to help keep exercise in our regular routine. I hope this helps, I know it has helped me.
